The Base at the Beginning of the Hypergrid

What is this all about?
Why do we need it?
And what is 42?

Well, last things first: i like 42, because it is the answer to "Life, the universe, and everything", according to Douglas Adams, author of  "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

This is my attempt to create a collection of information about OpenSimulator, especially about its hypergrid implementation.

The HyperBase42 (this blog and the opensimulator based 3d virtual world it accompanies) was born out of the necessity to have a base for hypergrid (hg) travels in the hg1.5 realm.

hg? Travel? wtf?

Ok... lets start a bit slower... since you found this site i can imagine you already know a bit about opensim, Second Life (tm), the universe and everything. During a meeting of the Hypergrid Adventurers Club (HGAC) we talked about the current state of the hypergrid (see this great explanation by =V=).

Currently we have 3 flavors of the hypergrid protocol in opensim:
hg1.0, the first implementation is in use on installations using opensim up to version 0.6.
hg1.5 (i6) was introduced with the 0.7 update
hg1.5 (i7) is the latest and came with 0.7.1

All those are not compatible with each others :(

Since the HGAC is based on a 0.6.9 opensim (Jokaydia Grid) i offered to set up a 0.7.0.2 based sim as a starting point for travels into the hg1.5 realm.

Well... i slowly started to realize the is a lot of information about opensim, the hypergrid and everything out there, but it seems to be splattered all over the net.

So here is my suggestion: let us gather people who share interest in the hypergrid technology, adventurers, developers, media specialists... and set up a knowledge base and a home base in the hypergrid to boost the developing net of the future!

My idea is to join forces, provide info, check out new places to visit, help the developers to catch bugs... much more than i could ever do on my own. So i need YOU, your time and knowledge, your creativity to build this into something useful for us all.

So far i have set up a little two sim installation at secondlife://hbase42.hopto.org:9042
If you dont have an account on a hg1.5 grid yet you can create one at the Base (http://hbase42.hopto.org:9042/wifi) (I have to activate them, so it might take a bit until you can login)

  1. I think this sounds like an excellent idea - would the knowledge-base be best set up as a wiki? Easy way for people to add information as they find it?
Thanks for getting this initiative off the ground!

  2. You are right Arwenna, and i was thinking about setting one up, but there are some reasons not to do this, at least not now: first of all i want to provide links to existing places to find and update info, e.g. there is already a hypergrid wiki on the opensimulator.org site. And many are simply to shy to update a wiki. Lets see how this turns out, if we need more info locally i will set up a wiki somehow.

  3. Hi, just a quick update: I'm working on an expanded version of the hyperbase. A few thoughts/ideas/considerations:

1.: The easiest way to deal with the current hypergrid divide is to have two different opensim installations running (one for 0.7 and one for 0.6.9). I recently finally installed diva 13981 and will try if both installations can share the same db; I'm using two separate ones for now, but the same db for both would be excellent.
2.: I'm planning to make some floating planets/asteroids/rocks/thingummies. Maybe make hypergates on these to destinations that are similar to what they look like. Might be hard to keep them up to date, though, so maybe just for major/popular destinations.
3.: Related to the previous - Hypergates do share a serious drawback - they're not searchable and need to be constantly updated. They're more like the open directory than google, and while that might work now (if it works right now) it's unclear how well it might work in the future.

  4. Hi there Neo. Please count me in as a volunteer to help out/share knowledge with anyone who is interested in broadening the scope of hypergrid exploration. I've been a sideline developer and crash test dummy of the entire OpenSim project for a while now and have run into as many walls as I have knocked down. I'll be happy to share all my notes and experiences with the hypernaut collective!

I wish I could help you with a hosting solution for your server, but I'm looking for an affordable host myself. Here's what I've put together in the meantime:

The laptop I work on is my main development machine and is (luckily) well configured - so I now actually run my OpenSim instances in the background and log into them when I need to work on something or hyperjump to another grid. I have several flavors of OS to work with, from the last stable 0.6.9RC2 to the newest OSGrid 0.7.1. dev and even AuroraSim. I have all the databases either shared or synchronized so whatever work I do is always consistent regardless of which version of OS I'm running.

Ok, I'll stop rambling. The short version is that I'd love to try coordinating a small impromptu field trip with a few hypernauts to see if we can all start from here and how well it performs. It works fine for me alone, but I have no idea how it will react to multiple users other than I should have enough horsepower to manage it. It's more of a proof-of-concept project, but at least it would provide another grid for testing and expanding jump bases.

Other than that, if there's any info you'd like to discuss or projects/events you or anyone else here would like to coordinate just email/tweet me. I'm always willing to participate and help in any way I can.

Happy New Year everyone! See y'all on the grid.
